Sometimes you really need a break from the usual routines—the never-ending to-do list, the life admin. Not just a weekend off, but a real pause, where your mind can slow down and your body can finally feel better.
A traditional vacation can be lovely, of course—but a retreat in nature feels… different. It has a way of helping you notice the little things again: the light through the trees, the wind on your face, or the gentle movement of a horse nearby.
Silence is Golden…
Last week one of our guests at Tula Vida, Dr Ann Baldwin, who is a teacher at the University of Arizona, told us how much better she was feeling immersed in nature with the lack of human generated noise. To quote her newsletter about it (see www.mind-body-science.com), she said:
“I’ve noticed I can hear myself think more clearly and I experience more insights because I am less distracted and more self-aware….
Research shows that quiet solitude clears our minds, improves self-awareness, helps us focus on issues that are most important to us and even creates new cells in a part of the brain called the hippocampus that foster memory formation, emotional regulation, blood pressure control, and stress reduction.
A study published in the journal, “Heart” in 2006 found that two minutes of silence deceased heart rate and blood pressure significantly more than listening to “relaxing” classical music.”
Connection versus Distraction
One of the things that stands out about being in nature is how quiet the world suddenly becomes. The emails, notifications, and city noise fade. People often say they feel “present” for the first time in ages—really tuned in to their surroundings and to themselves (instead of distractions and thoughts). And being with others in that space often brings a sense of connection that feels natural and unforced. Unhurried.
Vacations can be fun, but sometimes they pull our attention outward—to sights, activities, or even photos—rather than inward, toward rest and noticing. At Tula Vida, we like to give your mind gentle focus while taking care of the basics: comfort, nourishment, and safety. That way, you can settle into enjoying each moment, whether that’s learning about nervous systems, watching the dragonflies, noticing each mouthful of food or simply soaking in the surrounding views.
Restoring Mind and Body…and Soul
Being in nature restores in a way that goes deeper than a normal break. The greens, fresh air, and soft sounds help the body relax and the mind slow down. People often notice their energy coming back, sleep improving and a sense of calm that lasts beyond the retreat. You can even borrow monitors to see for yourself how your heart and nervous system respond—sometimes the proof of relaxation is visible in real time
A nature retreat isn’t just a pause. It’s a chance to reconnect—with yourself, your surroundings, and the simple rhythms that nourish you but often get lost in daily life.
And this is food for the soul.
